Beaches on PEI

The Inn At Bay Fortune is ideally located in Eastern PEI, the home of some of the best beaches on the Island. Before the rebranding of the eastern tip of the Island to Points East Coastal Drive, Kings County was known as Bays and Dunes.

The inn sits on a rise overlooking the mouth of the Fortune River (more commonly known as Bay Fortune), the harbour, and the Northumberland Strait beyond. Framing the east side of the harbour is a beach known as Front Beach, to the west is 100 plus acre Abell’s Cape and the expansive Back Beach.

Back Beach is a kilometer long beach located a two minute drive from The Inn At Bay Fortune. Facing the Northumberland Strait, Back Beach offers a gentle drop off ideal for families with young children for a safe swimming location. Back Beach separates Eglington Cove from the Northumberland Strait mostly used by locals and summer residents with cottages in the area.

Front Beach is a bit smaller than Back Beach and is a five minute drive from The Inn At Bay Fortune. Nestled in the woods between the road and the beach are several cottages dating to the mid to late 1800’s originally owned by New York Thespians who used Bay Fortune as a summer escape from the heat of the city, including Charles Flockton who brought his comedy company with him for the summer months.

When we experience good beach weather it is described as a Basin Head Day. Basin Head is a supervised swimming area that is accessed through the Basin Head Fisheries Museum parking area. The wharf provides kids young and old the perfect way to make the plunge whether it is jumping from the bridge or the wharf into the run. Miles, or kilometers of beach stretch out from the wharf without any other public access than from Basin Head one can walk undisturbed for the perfect beach walk.

Closer to home is Sally’s Beach Provincial Park adjacent to our sister property, The Inn At Spry Point. A ten minute drive from Bay Fortune to Sally’s Beach or a forty five minute bike ride will gain you access to a beach very popular with locals, guests of both our inns, and the many cottage owners that have built summer homes between Annadale and Spry Point. The park is comprised of almost 40 acres, an open field brings you to a Pavilion shelter with public washrooms, an outdoor heated shower and boardwalk to the expansive stretch of beach fronting Spry Cove.

Another beach location worthy of highlighting is Greenwich National Park Beach located about twenty minutes from The Inn At Bay Fortune. The Greenwich Dunes area of PEI is a 900 acre natural treasure and the most recent addition to the Parks Canada system on PEI. Located on the western end of the peninsula formed by St. Peters Bay and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Greenwich Dunes hosts the National Parks Interpretive Centre. There are a number of nice walks (1.25 to 4.5 kms), one of which starts you on a walk in the woods which leads you to a boardwalk and floating bridge across a barachois to access the beach. In 1998 the six kilometer tip of the peninsula was transferred from the province to protect and preserve the natural and cultural resources found in the area such as the spectacular parabolic dunes
